THE HISTORY: In 800 AD the first people arrived in the country New Zeeland. The first people called them self Maoris. The arrived in canoes from islands in Pacific Ocean. In 1769 the first Europeans came. That was James Cook and his crews. The only European who came there on many years was whale and seal hunters. In 1840 was New Zeeland a British colony. A treaty was signed between the British and the Maoris people. The Treaty sad that the Queen in England, Queen Victoria, ruled New Zeeland. But It also said that the Maoris owned their own lands. But it was them who don’t respect the treaty, white settlers. They killed many Maoris and take all their ground. But in 1860 the Maoris rebelled and ruled the country again. More cultures came to New Zeeland. One day, in 1861, gold was found in the city Otago in the South Island. It came many gold diggers to the country, but in 1871 the gold mines closed. And the gold diggers moved and settled in other parts of the country. After that many Scandinavian and Germans came to New Zeeland to build railways, and it attracted Greeks, Italians and Lebanese to also build railways in New Zeeland.
