This film is about a girl called Teena Brandon (played by the actress Hilary Swank) who has some psychological peturbation and thinks she’s a boy called Brandon Teena.

The film is about her life as a teenager in the southern parts of the United States where she starts hanging out with a gang and she fall in love with a girl. She tries to hide her original sex by using male clothes and acting like a boy. But it all changes when she’s supposed to have sex with this girl she’s fallen in love with, and this girl have a boyfriend that is the leader of the gang, which of course creates huge problems.

It’s a typical American ”road-movie” where most of the plot happens outside and in cars on their way through the American countryside.

The music, actually the thing that I liked the most in the film, is very fitting and the main song is absolutely the best song taken from a soundtrack during 1998. The song is called ”Bluest eyes in Texas” and is performed by Nina Persson (from the Swedish gruop of the Cardigans) and Nathan Larson. The song is about how the blue eyes hide a stranger that really ain’t the person he/she is trying to be.

The main actress, Hilary Swank, acts in a way that is impossible to immitate. To play a girl that thinks she’s a boy is, in my opinion, pretty hard and as I’m concerned, this is the only known performance of this kind. Without Hilary Swank this movie wouldn’t be as good as it is. This incredible performance gave Hilary the Academy Award in 1999 as Best Actress and also the Golden Globe in New York, the same year, for the same title.

The director, Kimberly Pierce, has done a great job and it seems that she has been thinking on every detail in the movie; how Hilary Swank shall act when it comes to emotions to get the best out of her role, all details in the countryside and of course the terriffic scenes.
