“The deck was tilting. Even the passengers who hadn’t believed the Titanic could sink were frantic with fear.”
The book I’ve read name is called “SOS Titanic” and is about, what they thought was the unsinkable ship Titanic. In the book we get to follow Barry O´Neill under his trip at the Titanic.
Barry is 15 years old and lives with his grandparents in a village in Ireland. I get the impression that they live quite well and that they’re wasn’t so poor. Barry is on his way to New York, where his parents, who he has never seen before, live. Barry doesn’t travel alone, he travels with Mr Scollins who is 19 years old. Mr Scollins is a friend to Barry’s grandfather and owns a jewellery store in the village. But of some reason Barry need to travel home to his parents, who he’s never seen, in New York. Why he hasn’t met his parents before, I don’t know. At the boat he meets a girl called Pegeen Flynn, and he falls in love with her. But there are two problems; the first is that Barry travels in the first class and Pegeen in the steerage, the first class passengers and the steerage passengers are not allowed to meet each others. The second problem is that Pegeen’s brothers are the well-known “Flynn brothers”. They live in the same village as Barry and are the most disorderly brothers in the whole village.
I think Barry is very kind and fearless, because even though the Flynn brothers have threatened to throw him overboard if he go near their sister, he does it however.
When I at first saw the book I had quite low expectations, because I thought the book looked boring, but when I read at the back-side of the book I thought the book seamed good and thrilling. That’s why I choose the citation above. But I think the book was a disappointment because when I had read back at the book the first time I thought that the book would be like the movie “Titanic”, but I think it was far away from that. The book is most about Barry and how he tries to get to know Pegeen. There’s not so much action in the story until the ship hits the iceberg, but by that time the book is almost read-finished. The book is also very tragic because you know it has actually happened.
The language is good, and there are not so many difficult words in the book. There are dialogues, but not so many, which make the book a little boring to read I think. You most get to follow Barry’s thoughts and what he does and have done. The author, Eve Bunting, writes very well-detailed when she for example describes the environment, which I think is very good, because it’s easy to imagine in the head how it looks.
I would recommend this book to them who like to read and learn about things that have happened in the past. If I would recommend this book to a specific age...
