The white church tower and the massive church doorway had never looked this beautiful and breathtaking before. It had always seemed a little bit boring to me, the church image that is, but today it was almost liked every window and doorknob sparkled like never before. I could not believe that in less then twenty-four hours the whole church would be filled with people and that I would be standing next to the priest, waiting for my bride to walk towards me with that wonderful smile she always gives me when she’s exited.
But the truth is that Sarah hasn’t smile in along time, not since her father committed suicide about a year ago. I think she still hasn’t got over the death of her father, or Dadda as she always called him. She was the only one of herself and her two sisters that called him that. I have never really asked why she called him that. The real sad part is that it happened during our engagement party. We had just started to open all the presents from our friends and family when Nico, one of my cousins, came running towards us shouting that
Mr Jefferson was trying to hang himself in the backyard. Just earlier that night Mr Jefferson had complained about that it was to hot inside and that he would take some fresh air outside. I offered myself to go with him but he just told me that I should be enjoying the party instead of hanging out with an old man as himself. Of course I respected his whish of being alone and returned to the party. If I had known that he was not only going to take a bit of fresh air but also preparing to hang himself I would have not let him go so easily. Nico and my brother Travis had ran outside trying to get Mr Jefferson down but it was too late. When the ambulance arrived he wasn’t breathing and when they came to the hospital they declared him dead. The weeks that followed were tough for Sarah and me. Who should now hand over Sarah to me in the Church and who would dance with her after the weeding?
The burial was one of the worst things I have ever been through. It took place in the same church as the weeding between me and Sarah would do. This was also the church that Sarah’s parents had got marriage in and that was why we choose this one. Sarah’s mother had died when she was only a little girl and now both her parents were gone and buried together.
So now I was standing there in the church, suppose to feel like the luckiest man on earth but I could not. Tomorrow I was getting married to the girl I love but it felt so strange somehow. Sarah hadn’t been herself for the last couple of weeks. I have asked her probably a million times if she didn’t want to wait with the weeding because of her fathers’ death. But she only told me that her father would not have wished that to happen. So now the weeding was going to happen as planed.
The following day I woke up all by myself in a hotel room. Me and Sarah had decided long ago that on our weeding day we would not see each other until the actual weeding. So now I was here at this hotel at the most important day of my life. I took a quick shower before I was on my way to my best friends. His name was Patrick and we had known each other since we were little kids. I first meet him when we both had started a food war in the lunch room and were sent to the principals’ office for our punishment. Since that day we have been best friends and have done everything together. Patrick already had a wife and a kid on its way so this was one of the things I had to do on my own, without his help. Patrick was going to be my best man and had said that I could use his house to prepare myself for the weeding. Life had worked out pretty fine for Patrick. He had a nice house, a gorgeous wife, a nice car and a child on its way. I hoped my life together with Sarah would be at least that good.
After getting into my tuxedo I was on my way over to the church. It looked just as good as it did yesterday, maybe even better. The sun hit the windows perfectly and the big bell in the church tower sparkled in the sun like a diamond. This was absolutely the perfect day to get marriage. At this time people had started to arrive and I was getting more and more nervous. I had tried to call Sarah to check on her how she was doing but she had not answered any of my calls. I thought that she had banged out on me but I had heard from Patrick that she had arrived at church fifteen minutes after me. I started to relax more when I knew that Sarah hadn’t failed me and that she really wanted to be my wife forever.
After one hour the whole church was filled and I took my standing next to the priest. At my left side Patrick stood, smiling as he always does. The only thing we were waiting for was Sarah to say that she was ready. We waited for about twenty minutes before I went down and asked ...
