It’s December 24 and Christmas Eve, its snow outside if we are lucky. The sparkle snow is glittering in the dark, and if you see a lit somewhere in the dark you can be sure it’s Santa Claus. Now I’m going to tell you about the Christmas in Sweden, from the first December until Twelfth Night.
The Advent Candles is the first Christmas sign in Sweden. On the first Sunday in Advent the first candle is lit, on the second Sunday two candles are lit, and so on. We decorate our houses with advent starts and candlesticks in our windows. Now you can be sure it’s soon Christmas, in the store we can buy more and more Christmas stuff.
For many years Swedish TV and radio have featured an advent calendar with different themes – it becomes a “must” for most families at around 6 p.m.
On Lucia they bring saffron bread and gingerbread and sing traditional songs.
The food we find on the Christmas buffet in Sweden is meatballs, small sausages, “Janssons’s temptation” (type of potatoes gratin) and Christmas ham. Things that are not so usual are stockfish and soak bread in ham broth.
On Christmas day comes father Christmas visits and asks if there are any good children he can give gifts to! Gifts often have a riddle attached to them to guess the contents. It is also traditional to dance around the Christmas tree singing songs. The hole family decorate the Christmas tree together and playing Christmas carols to get in a Christmas feeling.
The rice pudding is a special Christmas porridge and contains one almond – the person who gets the almond is says that he will get good luck.
On Christmas day at 3 a.m. they show a program on TV, it’s always the same. It’s a tradition from a long time ago. Donald Duck, Lady and the Tramp, Cinderella, Chip and Dale and Goofy is same of the Disney movies that use to shows.
After Christmas it’s New Year’s Eve, that’s the party day and we are celebrate a new year. The hole Sweden is well-dressed and watching fire-works at the sky. Then the Christmas is over and the New Year’s Eve is it only one celebrating day left, Twelfth Night. Then we...
