Bokrecension: The wayward bus av John Steinbeck

Even though he wasn’t one of the authors we’d been working with before, I read a book written by John Steinbeck. It’s called The Wayward Bus. Even though he was not on our list, I found the book very intreeging, you could see the landscape in your mind since his descriptions are extremely detailed, when a new charachter is introduced he writes page after page on just how he/she looks like and how their mind works. So when i read this book, time washes by and all of a sudden it is time to go to sleep.

Juan and Alice run a restaurant/ car workshop in the californian outback. About every day Juan drives his metallic painted bus ”Sweetheart”, from ”Rebel Corners”, his and his wife’s little oasis in the desert, to the town San Juan de la Cruz, Mexico. At Rebel Corners the road to Mexico, is crossed by the public highway which leads all the way to Hollywood.
But one busride, Juan will never forget. On this way to San Juan de la Cruz the road crosses a river. This day, it rain’s heavily and the river rises; the old bridge is not safe so the bus has to take a detour for a safer passage. The road gets muddy and the bus gets stuck. Now they’re trapped and have to, at least, spend the night in the wild.
There is this slightley mysterious, very beautiful and attractive woman on the busride: everybody first believes she a movie star. Her presence makes all the men go crazy, everyone wants a piece of the cake. Now arguments rise to the surface.

The main message in this book, I believe, is that men are way too easy to be controlled by women. Especially when a real ”stunner” crosses your path. Steinbeck deeply describes what goes on in the men’s minds around ”Camille”. But then we are also told how easy it is for her to manipulate and toy with them, luring them to believe they acctually have a chance on her.

This book is good entertainment but nothing deep to amuse the mind of the reader.
At first everything is kind of a blur, only one character at the time is described, so you don’t know really who is who. But as you get further down the pages, you get hooked because of the many personal dilemmas and dramas.

This book I would recommend to people who have not read that much, because it’s really easy...
