WAR HORSE

Theme

For me the theme was pretty clear, “aganist all odds”. Alberts father , Ted, went to the farmers market to buy a working animal, but instead he bought a young and not as strong horse as the other working horses. Albert pretty much fell in love with the horse and even if the horse wasn’t made for the kind of work that it was expected to performe at the farm, Albert trained it and made the horse really useful and strong. If Albert and his family wanted to keep the horse and their farm the horse Joey needed to plow their field, so Ted could sow. They needed to sell crops and make money before October. Even if noone thought it was possible, Albert teached Joey how to plow, and they made it! But a lot of rain made the crops worthless and Ted had to sell Joey to keep the farm. But not even that could separate Joey and Albert, they found each other again. This is what makes the theme really clear form me.

I could also see a couple of motifs, like forbidden love. Everything that happened to Joey and Albert made it hard for them to be with each other. It was almost like they were ment to not be together. Injustice is also a word I thought of when I saw the movie. Albert is a very nice and honest man. He deserves to be happy. He finaly gets Joey, but it was almost like a tease. Because suddenly Joey is take away from him and I think it’s really unfair.

Characterization

Albert

He appeares as a very loving and believing person. He watshed Joey grow and he always looked at him with warmth and love. When he started to take care of it he always believed in Joey and knew he would make it. I think this is really strong and it shows that Albert is a strong person. Not many boys in his age could stand up for an animal against so many people and be the only one believing in it. You could see how mouch he really cares about Joey when he volunteer to the army so he could be with his horse. You could also see that Albert is very sensitive. His facial expressions and how he reacts when his father is about to shot Joey, or when he realize that Joey has been sold to the army. All in one, I find Albert as a faithful, brave and caring person.

Joey

In the movie Joey seem to care alot about the people and other horses that he get close to. He have easy to trust and obey almost everyone who is “owning” him. He is also very brave. You could see that in the way he wanted to stay at the black horse side when he couldn’t walk. But still I need to actually think of him as what he really are, a horse. First I thought it was brave of Joey to run straight through “No man’s land”, but I don’t think a horse would do something like that because he’s brave. More because he has to or because it’s confused.

Ted (Alberts father)

He is a good man caring alot about his family and their farm, but the drinking problems and how he feels about him self often gets in the way and makes him seem worse then he really is. Thats probably why Albert dosen’t have that much of trust in his dad. Rose showes Albert the medals from the wars his father fought in and then everything gets clear and you understand whats really up with Ted. I don’t think he really wanted to sell Joey, he know how much Joey ment to Albert, but as much as he cared about his family he couldn’t risk to be broke and let his family live on the street. When Albert gets back from the war, Ted take his son in his arms and let him know how much he really care and love him.

Is the story plausible?

When I just thought about it I didn’t think this could be real. Maybe one of all the happenings in the movie could, but not all of them together. For example, that a horse learned how to plow even if noone thought it would could probably have happened, or that a horse survived the war.

When i started to look around on the internet I found something that really catched my eye. A story about a horse that survived many famous battles during the world war one and returned to Isle of Wight, where he was raised, four years later. But this story is a little diffrent from the one in the movie. One of this things is that the owner went to war with the horse and they were never seperated. The horse also stayed at the brittish side during the whole war.

Message

I think this movie has some really important messages that is worth to bring up. One that I think of is the bound of friendship. The movie showes that it dosent matter if both are humans. Love ad care can be found anywhere, even with a horse. Albert really cares about his Joey and is willing to do anythin...
