The first aim of this study was to on historical background survey women's alcohol habits and especially to investigate women aged 50-59 living in the Lund area. The second aim was to increase the understanding of how women's sex role has a restrictive influence on their alcohol habits. To investigate women's alcohol habits I made two quantitative studies. From secondary data I found that the alcohol consumption for Swedish women aged 18-70 had increased and in 1999 the average weekly consumption was 15-centilitres of alcohol (40 %). From a population based study of women aged 50-59 and living in the Lund area I investigate 6 623 women's alcohol consumption. In general they had a consumption of 11,5 centilitres/week. There are great variations of consumption in the group; 26,0 % have no weekly consumption of alcohol, 57,4 % consume less than 7 drinks/week, 11,9 % at least 7 but less than 14 drinks/week and 4,2 % consume at least 14 drinks/week. Their alcohol consumption relates to their social situation, health, physical/mental well being and quality of life. To increase the understanding of the sex role I made a qualitative study on secondary data. I found that women who drink are looked upon as more sexually loose and also more accepted victims of sexual abuse. Being a parent has a stronger restrictive influence on women's than on men's consumption as well as the fact that the woman still has the main responsibility for the family and the household.
