Scotland is the part of Great Britain, which is in the north of the
country. It’s history, architecture and culture is one of the most
impressive in the whole north Europe, and the landscape is stunning beautiful. If you ever go to Scotland, you must visit some of the castles or mansions, which there are plenty of. Of course, you will also see a lot of big green hills and mountains – a natural part of the nature.

The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh, even though Glasgow is the largest
city. Some other large cities worth mentioning are Aberdeen, Dundee and
Stirling.

About Edinburgh

The name Edinburgh comes from “Din Edyn”, which means “Fort of Edyn” in
Brythonic. Edinburgh is a city with a large amount of culture-life and it
also has a long history. Some people even call Edinburgh “Athens of the
north” because it have similarities with Acropolis in Greece. The town is
divided into Old Town and New Town – The Old Town has clear medieval
influences with its Cathedrals and Reformation-era buildings.
The New Town was built because the Old Town had started to get so crowded and compact in the 18th Century.

At a hill rising above the Old Town lies the Edinburgh Castle. The Castle
is the most visited place in whole Scotland, and it is always open for
visitors. The road which leads up to the castle is called The Royal Mile, and along that road you can find many interesting shops and souvenirs to buy.

The most famous group of islands is called the Shetland Islands. Perhaps you already know that from the Shetland Islands, a small pony was introduced to the world. Of course I am talking about the Shetland Pony! It is one of the smallest horses there is.

The history of Scotland is strongly influenced by the Wikings. Thousand
years ago Wikings fron Scandinavia travelled over the North Sea and settled down in this new, mysterious part of Europe. Some people say that so many Scottish people are blonde and got freckles, just because of this medieval Scandinavian invasion! Whether you want to believe it or not is up to you...

Besides the castles and the anciend buildings, the nature is as mentioned
a big magnet for tourists. Thousands of people travel to "The Highlands" every year, to enjoy the landscape and its history. I personally think that many people comes to see the Scottish "specialities", such as Loch Ness (we all know about the Loch Ness Monster, don´t we?), bagpipes and of course kilts! Over all...
