One of the most significant changes in human history has occurred during the past forty years. It is the gender revolution. In the words of historian William Manchester, "the erasure of distinctions between the sexes is not only the most striking issue of our time, it may be the most profound the race has ever confronted."
Women in Sweden and many other countries have been fighting for equality: an equal voice in legislature, equal pay at jobs, and equal rights to the benefits that men are entitled to. They've countered the arguments about genetic and mental inferiority through science and proven their ability to compete at the same level as men in almost every field. Yet the actualization of equality is still far from our reach.
Despite the fact that women and men are nearly the same physically, the fact remains that our bodies are different. Studies in psychology have also shown that most women do process things differently than men. Women are known to be better at multi-tasking than most men, who must process things one at a time rather than all at once. Whether it's conditioning or biological, the fact remains that there are differences between men and women, so can the two sexes ever really be considered equal?
Gender equality means an equal visibility, empowerment and participation of both sexes in all spheres of public and private life. This equality, true equality, is only found in a society that is built on both male and female principles. This does not mean women in men's jobs or vice versa necessarily, but perspectives that are also feminine. Equality bears gifts for all and is, in my mind, the true mark of an advanced culture. It takes the burden of responsibility off the male and spreads it evenly. It allows men to be sensitive. It allows women to be tough. It allows for all possibilities that are inherent within eve...
