Go Ask Alice
This book is about a sixteen year old girl whose name I don't think is ever mentioned, but judging by the title I think her name is Alice. She comes from a good and quite rich family, which includes her mom, dad, little sister and little brother. There are many by characters, so I can't mention them all, but one worth mentioning is a boy named Joel, who eventually becomes her boyfriend.
It takes place somewhere in America, but I can't tell where, because where the name of the city or the state is supposed to be there are underlines, so you're not supposed to know where it takes place because the editors don't want to cause prejudice and give that place a bad reputation.
One day, she meets an old friend who invites her to a party. She gladly accepts, thinking it will be a great way to make some new friends. So she attends the party, innocently unaware of that this will be the first time she uses drugs.
Like I said, she doesn't know that she's going to use drugs, because there are fourteen bottles of coke at the party and a few of them contain the drug LSD, and of course, she gets one of those.
Afterwards she finds the experience very exciting and she wants to try pot, but she is determined to try it just once and then never use any kind of drug again. But her new "friends" introduce her to all sorts of drugs and before she knows it, she's an addict.
Several times she tries to stop using, but again and again she falls back into the addiction. This really made me frustrated and angry with her, but at the same time it kind of bored me. But since this is a real diary I guess the editors of the book couldn't do much about the story itself, like deleting things, especially not important things like these.
Even after all the horrible experiences she goes through, you still feel like she remains herself. She writes in a certain way which makes you really feel for her, because she seems so pure and innocent. And on the inside of that harsh and tough young woman, there is a little girl who's desperately crying for help.
The theme of the book is obviously drugs and it was published to prevent people from using them, so that is the purpose of the book.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone. I don't think it's directed to a certain age group, anyone can read it. And if you find it hard reading English books then this one would be great to begin with, because it's not that long and the language is rather easy. The only problem I had with this book is that the pages smell quite musty.
