The skin is the body's largest organ and it has an area of ??nearly two square meters.
The skin has many different tasks:
It protects against diseases including bacteria, viruses, corrosive materials and abrasion.
Helps keep body temperature at the right level.
Preventing losing too much fluid.
Secrete water and salts by sweating and evaporation.
Stores moisture and fat.
Protects the body against harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
Formation of vitamin D with sun's help, as needed, among other things for the body to absorb calcium into bone.
Serves as a large sensory organ who can feel cold, heat, pressure, touch and pain.
Signals to the surroundings, such as blushing when you get embarrassed.
Although the skin seems to be very thin, it consists of several layers of different types of tissues. Skin components are
-Epidermis
-Cutis
-Dermis
The epidermis is the part of the skin that you see. The outermost cell layers of the epidermis called the stratum corneum consists of dead, cornified cells. It makes the skin is resistant to corrosive materials and abrasion. The thickness varies in different parts of the body. Skin that has worn a lot, such as hand and feet, has thick epidermis. It may be a millimeter or more. The rest ofthe epidermis is 0.05 to 0.1 millimeters thick. Thinnest skin on the eyelids.In the lowermost cell layers are adjacent to the basement membrane cells that contain a dye or pigment. Cells called melanocytes. The pigment in the cellsprotects the skin from the sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation. Dark-skinned peoplehave more pigment cells than light-skinned.
The dermis lies below the epidermis. The dermis is between a half and threemillimeters thick and is thickest at the back. The boundary between the two skin layers are undulated. The dermis consists of connective tissue, which contains plenty of protein fibers of collagen and elastin. Therefore, the dermis, both strong and elastic. With age, the number of elastic fibers, and the skin therefore becomes loose and wrinkled. The cutis is plenty of blood vessels which supply oxygen and nutrients. Blood circulation in the dermis is also important for the body to maintain the correct temperature. The dermis contains many fat cells are heat insulating and cushioning.
