“Dead man walking”
The story takes place in the southern parts of the United States and is based on a true story. In the movie we learn about two main characters. Sister Helen Prejean, a nun who devotes her life to the poor and helpless, and the hate filled and anti social convicted murderer Mathew Poncele who shows us a situation beyond our worst nightmare.
It is amazing how two so different characters from two different worlds can connect during such unusual circumstances.
Sister Helens love, compassion and her strong believe in that capital punishment is wrong brings her to him, while loneliness and fear brings him to her. Sean Penns performance as the death sentenced young man is breathtaking. Together with the other main character who is played by Susan Surandon and the brilliant director Tim Robbins, they have created a film that touched my heart deeply. Not only does the film bring up moral questions weather taking a persons life is right or wrong, even if it involves the government. It also shows that nobody is entirely evil, and that even murderers have the same ability as other people to feel regret and sorrow.
The movie is predictable at the same time as it is unpredictable. Some parts are easy to figure out, while the end is rather surprising. I am used to see happy endings in American movies, while Canadian and French movies are known to have endings that might be seen as devastating. But even in this ending a candle is lighten in the darkness.
