Martin Luther King, Jr’s speech ”I have a dream” is about the Negro’s situation in America. King opened the speech by talking about the Emancipation Proclamation which Abraham Lincoln signed in 1863. He said that this proclamation gave hope to millions of Negros but it did not have any effect. That the Negro still was not free one hundred years after the proclamation. He meant that the Negros lived “on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity”, that the Negro found themselves as exiles in their own country.
He moved on by talking about the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence who, in his eyes had failed their promises to the people of America – or at least the Negros in America. And then he came to the starting point for the whole speech. He told the listeners that “Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice”. He continues the speech by telling more reasons for that the time had come for the Negros to fight down the racial injustices in America. He also talked about the devastating consequences the racial injustices would have for America – both for black and white people.
He finished the speech by telling the listeners about his dreams. His dream about America as a country where every man is created equal. And he mentioned a couple of places where the racial differences where extra big. The absolutely last thing he said was “When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, ‘Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!’ ”.
I think that this speech is very good. It has a clear way to get the message through, and the message was, and is still, very important. To make a society functional it is important to respect everyone and treat everyone equal. It does not matter if you are black, red, white or yellow, what religion you have or what political affiliation you have – you do always have something to provide to the society.
