The wave review by Morton Rhue Laurie Saunders is the headperson in this book and she’s a very pretty and popular girl with short light-brown hair and green eyes. She’s also smart and her grades are good. Laurie is the editor-in-chief at the school paper (The Gordon Grapevine) and she’s the one who almost does all the work. Her best friend is Amy Smith and they’re almost always together. Laurie has a boyfriend and his name is David Collins. David is the running back in the schools football team. Ben Ross is the history teacher at Gordon High and he’s very liked among the students. Ben is quite tall and he has short brown hair and blue eyes. He could get the class from no interest what so ever to being total interested in his subject by just having one lesson. He is really smart and one of the best teachers at Gordon High. Ben often gets kind of absorbed in a subject or it could be anything, like Indians for example. When he gets absorbed all he thinks about and talks about is the thing that he’s absorbed with. That’s how all this with The Wave started, he got absorbed with the Nazism and Hitler. 2. The Wave takes place in a high school, it could be anywhere in the world. But the book is based on a true story which took place in a town called Palo Alto, California in 1969. I know that because it says so in the afterwords. 3. The book starts with that Ben Ross shows Laurie and her class a movie about the concentration camps in Germany during World War II. After the movie a lot of the students ask him questions about why the Germans let this happen. That’s when he gets the idea how to show them why. It starts with that Ben experiments discipline with the class and makes them sit and answer his questions in a special way. The students feel a sort of energy in the classroom like a hunger for more discipline. He gives them a motto “Strength through Discipline” and he makes them repeat it over and over again while sitting in the way he had told them. The next day he gives them a new motto, “Strength through Community”. He makes up a symbol (a wave) and a special greeting for “Wave members only”. That’s when they start to call themselves “The Wave”. Laurie’s mother isn’t so happy about The Wave and she tells Laurie to be careful. Ben’s wife also gets worried about what’ll happen with The Wave. Ben creates a poster with a wave on it and he start to dress different, only clothes with different shades of blue. He gives them a third motto, “Strength through Action” and now they start to recruit more members. They who didn’t have friends before The Wave got friends after joining it because they all thought of themselves as a “community”. Some of the members gets the assignment to report every rule break to Mr. Ross. The Wave is recruiting more and more members and some students are even cutting classes just to be at Ben’s history lessons. Laurie’s mother is still worried about The Wave and she thinks it’s starting to look like a cult. Ben Ross gets called to the principal’s office because the principal is a little bit concerned about The Wave but he lets him continue his experiment. Laurie gets an anonymous letter sent to The Gordon Grapevine which says that a student was forced by a Wave member to join The Wave. She publicizes it and it gets an enormous reaction but all members of The Wave denies it. The students get really obsessed with The Wave. Ben even gets his own “bodyguard”. A fight starts at the school because a boy said something against The Wave. The boy and his family are Jewish and they think it’s starting to look like Nazi Germany. Many parents complain to the school about Ben’s experiments and the principal wants Ben to stop it immediately. Ben says that the principal has to give him two more days so that he could teach the students a lesson they never would forget. The principal agrees but he says that if Ben fails he will have to fire him. Ben told his class that later that afternoon there would be a rally for wave members only. Every wave member was there when Ben entered the stage. Behind him he had a huge TV screen and he told the wave members that they would be on satellite television with other wave members at other schools in USA. Suddenly a picture of Adolph Hitler showed on the screen...
