In this legal thriller we follow a poor, extremely streetwise kid who finds out the whereabouts of a murdered senators body. After hiring a lawyer he dodges the FBI, U.S. Attorneys, he even outsmarts the mafia on his journey to a life in the federal witness protection program.
Quotations:
The first quotation I’ve chosen is:
“I saw it in a movie once…”– said by Mark Sway on numerous occasions.
I like this line because it’s always what Mark says when he’s objectively judging the position he’s in. For example, I’ll tell you about the first time Mark hears about the federal witness protection program. He is reluctant to the idea, because he thinks the mafia will find him in a year or two at most, if he is lucky. He saw it in a movie once. What Mark saw in movies once also gives him courage and strength to withhold the massive pressure put upon him.
“Fink glanced about fearfully, uncertain whether to sit, stand, speak or crawl under the table.” – said about assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Fink as he enters the juvenile court in Memphis for the second time.
I really love this sentence, because I think it reflects the thoughts and feelings most of the characters in this book are experiencing. Especially the FBI and the Attorneys, in other words the “good” guys hunting Mark Sway must have felt lost and helpless at times.
Last among the quotations, but not least, is:
“I can issue a custody order for any child alleged to be delinquent.” – spoken by Judge Harry Roosevelt regarding how to keep Mark safe.
I’ve chosen this because the sentence contains a couple of words that are hard to comprehend. It’s also a taste of how Grisham writes with legal accuracy, and “The Client” is truly written in a legal language. At times it’s really hard to understand what’s happening.
I think this is a great novel, and I read it with great pleasure. It moved me. I mean that when it was sad, I was sad and it also made me laugh out loud a couple of times. His characters are well detailed and described so well that it was no problem identifying them as persons. I think the story was intriguing, full of excitement and very realistic. Grisham is writing with a lot of insight in the legal world and he has really captured the American fantasies and fears. An upcoming...
