Good night, Mr Tom

The story starts with an old man, Thomas Oakley, getting an offer to play organ in the church choir. He says that he’s going to think about it. After that a train arrives from London. A group of children goes off, and a lady called Mrs Ford takes care of them. She goes to Thomas Oakley’s house and rings the bell. She says; “that with the declaration of war imminent you have to take care of a child and his mom wanted him to be near the church”. She pushes a little boy towards Thomas and says that his name is William Beech. William eats at Toms place, and he eats and eats and finally Tom says that if he is full he doesn’t have to eat up. He starts to talk with Willie and Willie tells him that he is from London and that he lives with his mother there.
Thomas goes out and leaves Willie alone. Willie starts to investigate the house and finds a picture with Thomas and his wife. Then he hears church bells and leaves the house to. Thomas has gone to Mrs Ford to complain about William. He says that he’s not fit to take care of a child. At the same time, Willie has gone to the churchyard and there he meets a woman that obviously is his new teacher, Mrs Hartridge. When he goes home again a dog starts barking at him and he screams to the dog to shut up. Thomas comes home and says that it’s his dog, Sammy, and takes out a glowing iron bar. Willie faints and Tom gets suspicious.
Thomas goes through Willies things and finds the letter from his mother. She writes that she hopes that he will be a good kid and if not she has packed the belt. That makes Thomas sick and now he understands that Williams mother beats him.
Willie has got his own room and Thomas says that he can call him Tom. Willie goes to bed and before Tom leaves the room he says “Good night Mr Tom”, and smiles.
The next day Willie has pied in the bed and Thomas helps him to make it clean again. Thomas shows him the post office and he goes to talk with the doctor about Willies “problems”. Outside the doctors office Willie meets Zackarias, Zack. Tom talks to his neighbour and asks for clothes to Willie and he gets a lot of it. The next days Willie had pied in bed again, and Tom sees the wounds on Willies back and there by he through the belt out. The boys next door is working in Toms garden to help him build a shelter. Willie helps, but he has a too thick sweater and the other boys laughs at him and asks him if it isn’t to hot, but Tom helps him to cover up for it.
Tom goes to the church to play the organ at the church choir, but Willie stays at home to work at the shelter. Willie is out late to finish the shelter because he thinks that Tom will get mad otherwise but Tom gets him in. Willie tests the organ that Tom has and Tom gets really mad at him. Then to make it up, he invites Willie to go fishing with him and Willie brings Zack that brings all the other kids in town.
Willie is going to school and he supposes that he is going to be in the same class as Zack but they have placed him with the younger kids. Willie runs home crying and Tom talks to the teacher and finds out that Willie can’t read or write. Tom decides to teach Willie how to read and write and finds out that he is good at drawing. The next day Willie finds Tom at the churchyard weeping for his wife Rachel and his son John that died of scarlet fever. Tom buy colours and papers to Willies birthday and Willie goes and paints off an angel in a church and Tom finds him and pretends that he is mad when he takes him home. He ain’t mad, Tom has acully organised a surprise party for him. Willie gets very happy and surprised when he sees all his friends and blows out the candles smiling. They eats, and Willie hasn’t got any letter from his mother in London but that doesn’t seem to worry him but Tom gets a strange feeling. The mood is good and Toms plays organ he has got at home for the first time in years (because it remembers him about Rachel and John) and everyone’s happy. In the evening everybody leaves and Willie pukes because hi has eaten to much cake.
Willie moves up a class to Mrs Hartridge’s class but then he gets a letter from his mother that says she wants him back in London. Willie goes sadly away and falls asleep on the train and wakes up on the train station in London. He picks up by his mom that says that she has a surprise to him. When they come home it shows out to be a baby.
The next day Willie goes down to his mother that is making breakfast for him and she gets a gift from him that is a painting of Toms house. His mother thinks that it’s stolen, and then he tells her that he has been hanging out with Jews and girls. His mother gets really mad and locks him in, in a small room with the baby.
Tom is very lonesome and sad, he looks at Willies paintings, listens to the radio and waits for a letter from William. But he doesn’t get any. Later on when he digs in his garden he finds the belt, that Willies mom had send with him, and takes the train to London. In London he looks for William when an air alarm goes. He is forced in to a big bomb shelter and a police promise him to help him find Willie. Sammy starts to bark outside the Willies house, and then Tom understand that something is wrong so he breaks in. He finds Willie and the baby, Trudy that has died in the room in the Willies arms.
Willie is in a hospital, and Tom wants to take him home but he is not allowed to. Willie wakes up in the middle of the night screaming by a nightmare, and the next day he’s in a chock and Tom has to leave the hospital. In the reception of the hospital Tom meets the psychiatrist, Dr Stepton, that wants to put Willie in a children’s home, and Willie is beyond doubt because he wants to stay with Mr Tom. When Tom can’t stand the thought of Willie being stuck in the hospital without he kidnaps Willie and take him “home” again. When they are at Toms place a doctor checks on Willie and a couple of days after that Willie starts to hallucinate about things in his past. Willie is still weak but he tries to walk, but just falls together. They (Tom and Willie) decide that it will be best if Willie stays in bed for a few days until he gets well. Zack comes to visit him and they start to talk about sex. Willie doesn’t know anything about it, just that it’s a filthy thing that only bad people do, so Zack tells him a lot, but Tom overhears and interrupts the conversation. Zack leaves and Willie and Tom starts to talk. Willie feels guilty about Trudys death and then he tells Tom about the nightmare he has sometimes, about The Man that is going to take him away from Tom.
Then, when Willie has got his strength back he goes to see Mrs Hartridges, her husband has died in the war and now she has a little baby that she calls Peggy. She asks him if he wants to hold her, and he does. Then when he comes home Mrs Ford is there and Willie thinks that they have come to take him back, but then she tells him that his mom has died and that they have come to take him to a children’s home, just like he suspected. Then when he sees the psychiatrist, Dr Stepton, and becomes frightened because it’s the man from his nightmares! He runs up to his room and Tom follows and asks him if that in the man from his dreams and Willie answer that it is. Tom leaves Willie and goes down to the people downstairs, ready to fight for Willie. He tells Dr Stepton that Willie has nightmares about him saying that he will take Willie to a children’s home, take him away from Tom. Dr Stepton gets angry and another man takes Tom out of the house to have a chat with him. “You know Tom, what you are doing isn’t right. You really think that you love this kid and can take care of him? Tom, we both knows that you are doing this for yourself to feel younger and that is very selfish.” Tom gets even madder and decides to adopt Willie, and Willie gets unbelievably happy. To tell Zack the news, that he is going to stay in the countryside with Tom, he runs home to Zack and goes up to his room. When he comes up he sees Zack packing a bag and looking very sad. “What’s wrong Zack? Why are you packing? Don’t you like it here?” Willie asks. “They have bombed the docks in London, there’s where my dad works. I’m going back to se if he’s okay.”
Every day from that on Willie waits on the train station and hoping Zack will arrive and every day he is hoping to get a letter from Zack. Every...
