Harold the lonewolf

Once upon a time there was a little wolf, he was only a kid and was a very nice wolf. But in the forest where he lived there weren’t much wolves, in fact his family where the only wolf family in the whole forest, therefore he had no wolf friends. So he seeked his friends among other animals, however that was very hard for him. The other animals in the forest were all afraid of him, they thought that he would kill them and eat them up. Yet Harold wasn’t like that at all, he was a nice wolf who only ate vegetables, that was kind of unusual for a wolf, but that was just the way he was. Harold was very depressed because he didn’t have any friends. One day he went away to another part of the forest, where he had never been before, there Harold hoped that he could find new friends. That is what this short story is about.

Harold woke up earlier than his parents and he decided to not tell them where he was going, they wouldn’t let him go anyway, however he didn’t care about that right now. He started to walk to the west side of the forest, he didn’t really know how far he had to go but he was ready to go very far, because he hated to be alone.
The sun was shining and the birds were singing, Harold thought for himself, why couldn’t he be a bird, they seemed to have a lot of fun, and they we’re always together, he felt very lonely as walked through the forest.
After he had walked about an hour he came to a small river that he had never seen before, now, he thought, it was here he would find new friends. He saw a little rabbit jump around on the other side of the water, he went really excited and started to run towards the rabbit. The rabbit got really scared when he saw the wolf coming right against him and ran away. Harold got sad and stopped running.

- You’ll never catch that rabbit. The voice came from his back.

Harold turned around to see who it was talking to him, it was another wolf, he seemed to be in the same age as Harold himself was. Harold got very happy, other wolves that was more than he had hoped for when he left home this morning.

- I didn’t try to catch him, I just wanted him to be my friend, he said.
- Haha, that was a new one!
-
The comment came from another wolf who now stood besides the other one.

- No I am serious, Harold replied, I don’t eat other animals, I am a vegetarian.
- Are you kidding or what? An vegetarian wolf, never heard of. Who are you and where are you from, stranger?
- I am Harold from the east side of this forest. What about you guys, what are your names?
- Well little kid, go home to the fancy east side then because we don’t want any vegetarian wolves here. If you start eating meat and maybe we’ll be friends with you.

The wolves turned around and walked slowly away into the forest again. Now Harold felt even more depressed, he had finally found some other wolves that he could be friend with. But they didn’t want to be friends with him because he thought that it was wrong to eat others. Harold could respect that they ate other animals, so why couldn’t they respect him for his opinions? Harold saw no reason for himself to stay in this part of the forest, he thought of going home and get back to his regular lonely life, rather be lonely than eating other animals.

He was about to leave when he heard something in the bushes behind him, he turned around, there was that rabbit again, Harold looked him in the eyes and thought that the rabbit would ran away again. Strangely enough the rabbit didn’t do that at all, instead he walk slowly towards Harold and said:

- Hello my name is Pip. The rabbit said with an insecure voice.
- Hi there Pip, I am Harold, from the east side, Harold said with a little sad hopeful voice.
- Yeah I know, I heard your conversation with Saggy and Ramie. Is it true that you are a vegetarian?
- Yes, I would never eat anyone of my friends, on the other hand I do not have any friends, but I would never eat any other animals anyway.
- I don’t have any friends either, and since those two wolves ate my whole family, my life has just been shit. Pips voice were now turned from the insecure one to a little bit more said.
- Well, we can be friends!
- Yeah I would love that.
- You can come and live with me on the east side if you don’t have any family here, there is no wolves but me and my mother and father there. And they wouldn’t hurt you if I told them not to.
- Oh you are so nice, I have never met anyone like you before.
- Well come let’s go, before those other wolves comes back.

Then they walked across the water then furthermore towards the east side of the forest. They talked about lot’s of things and were very happy. But as they walked on, the other animals of the forest began to stare at them, who where those strange people they thought, a wolf and a rabbit couldn’t just walk side by side. If anyone of them ever saw an wolf and a rabbit together, the wolf was always chasing the rabbit. Pip felt uncomfortable with that however Harold didn’t care at all, he was just glad that he got some attention and the other animals which was afraid of him could see that he only was a kind wolf that didn’t want to hurt anyone.

After a couple of hours (it took a little bit longer time to walk home, now when Pip was together with him) they were finally in Harold’s neighbourhood.

- There I live ! Harold shouted excitedly.
- Oh I see. It was some insecureness in Pips voice again.
- What is it ?
- Well, where will I live? I mean your parents will not let a rabbit like me live in their with you, would they?
- Yes of course they would. They know I don’t have any friends moreover they will be very happy.

But it seemed like Harold didn’t know his parents as well as he thought he did…

When Harold started to move towards the opening between the two rocks where he lived, Pip wasn’t sure at all that he would dare to go in there. Harold said to him that it was ok and they would never hurt a friend of his. Unfortunately Pips listened to him and believed him. As they walked down the little stairs similar thing that was in the front of the house, they could here his parents talk.

- Mummy ! I am home. Harold almost screamed with excitement in his voice.
- Where the heck have you been ? the mother sounded angry and tired.
- Over at the west side, mum. I found a friend.
- Well good for you. I am hungry did you bring home any food to us.
- No mum you know I am a vegetarian.

To that Harolds mother only mumbled, keep in mind that they didn’t see eachother during this conversation. When Harriet, as Harolds mother was called, stepped in to the room where Harold and Pip where situated Pip got very scared, because she was a big wolf.

- So you did bring home some food after all! The mother said with a big appetite in her voice.
