The man who fought for freedom

Michael Collins is a big name for the Irish freedom. It was he who negotiated with the British parliament so that the Irish got their own state in 1922. Collins and his companions fought against the British Empire that wanted to take the charge of Ireland. Michael Collins became a big and important man for the Irish history.

Michael Collins was born in 1890. He was a soldier for the British Empire. Then he understood that they wanted to take the charge of Ireland, so he started to work against the British. He had his companion Harry Boland with him and they built an army of soldiers to prevent the British from taking over the power in Ireland. Eamon de Valera also helped them. He was born in America and had some contacts there. One time he travelled to America to ask the president for help.

Collins and Boland started to threat the security police. They said they would kill them if they didn’t negotiate. But it wasn’t many who listened so Collins and Boland’s army started to kill the policemen. When that happened the British reacted and started to fight against the rebellion, and they always asked for Michael Collins, because they saw him as the biggest threat.

After some years of fighting, when a lot of men had died, the British gave up and they wanted to negotiate with the Irish people. De Valera and the other men in the Irish council decided that Collins was the best man to negotiate with the British. Michael Collins came to the British Government and wanted a free republic but after some big fights and screaming Collins only came home with a free state. Northern Ireland still belonged to the British.

De Valera didn’t accept that, nor could Boland. So they wanted Collins out of their way. De Valera managed to kill Michael Collins in 1922.
