History

Ten years ago, the most insane ethnic cleansing humanity was in Rwanda. During a three-month period there were over one million Tutsi refugees brutally murdered by Hutu rebels in Rwanda. Although we live in a world of endless communication and a new society that never sleeps managed the rest of the world close their eyes to what was going on. But a person refused to turn a blind eye. This is the true story of one man's struggle to save as many refugees who just stands in his power by offering them protection in the hotel he is director of. Through his enormous courage and great heart, he managed to save the lives of more than one thousand refugees who would otherwise have been a safe demise.
Rwanda ruled, before the colonial, of the Tutsi royal family. The population of the country consisted of the two ethnic groups Hutus and Tutsis, which is actually very similar. They speak the same language, live in the same places, have the same traditions and marry each other. The main difference between the groups was about class. The upper classes consisted mostly of Tutsis, about 84%. However, many Tutsis were also farmers. On April 6, 1994 Rwanda's President Juvenile Habyarimana was mudded. His plane crashed down when it was about to land in Kigali. The government gave the Tutsi rebels the blame and the Hutu nationalist militias began their attacks against the Tutsis and the Tutsi-Hutu loyal people. It was at this point that the war broke out.

Hotel Rwanda

Film

Paul lives in Rwanda with his family and is a Hotel manger to one of the best Hotels in Rwanda, which is well known, people from all countries visit Pauls Hotel.
Paul is Hutu but his wife and children belongs to the Tutsi group. The Tutsi people in Rwanda could not say their real identity or their opinion; otherwise they could be killed by the Hutus. When Paul realized that the Hutu rebel was going to murder the Tutsi people, include his wife and children, he started to help them and other Tutsi people. Paul is very famous among diplomats, journalists and he has many contacts all over the world. He asks for help but when no one helps him, Paul begins to take in the Tutsi families into the hotel to hide and helps them to live there. He turns the hotel into a refugee camp under the guise of that the refugees are guests staying at the hotel. He does everything to help them and his own family. He open his arms for these people and give them hope and faith. Paul tried to bribe the police and the Hutu leaders with money and goods so that they would leave his people in peace. UN was in the country, but could not do anything of the mandate; the UN soldiers had no opportunity to enter an armed conflict despite the fact that several UN soldiers were killed by Hutu. They only help the white tourists to get home and left the black refugees in Rwanda. Paul rescued 1268 people by himself.

Where was everyone?
UN and countries in the Western world has been severely criticized for its conduct during the genocide. They could have stopped the genocide, but refrained. The whole world knew about the genocide, but they all closed their eyes and did not do anything to help them.

My own opinion
When I had seen the movie I got very upset, angry and disappointed at the world and every association which exists to help people in trouble but who didn't do anything when . The whole world knew about the genocide but no one dared to stand up and do something about it. Why? Were those too cowardly or those too afraid to expose himself to danger to save many other lives? The question is difficult to answer but it is always so that people turn a blind eye to that kind of terrible things when they should intervene and do something about it. As the United States, for example, they are always involved when it is war or something, but I don't know for what reason. Personally I think it can be worth this time so there was no U.S. could win on or after said benefit, like the oil in Iraq. United States war against Iraq was because of the benefits of why they were so ''nice' 'suddenly and helped the Kurds. For this they could win something to put themselves in and help the Kurds, but the genocide in Rwanda was unable to win any of them why not put them in. It is a disgrace how we could abandon these people. It is our responsibility to seek for more knowledge about the situation in Africa, Asia and other places in the world who are in crises. Hotel Rwanda is clearly one of the most memorable movies I have ever seen. I really got touched by the movie because of that it was so real, and that the world knew that genocide took place in Rwanda in spring 1994, but not one attempt to stop the war! We do not think that is true, but it was true! Unlike other genocides committed (ex Cambodia 1975-1979, where nobody knew what the Khmer Rouge did to its own people) as the world knew what was happening in Rwanda in 1994, but nobody did anything. United Nations "was" not intervening. This film is extremely important to ensure not to repeat the same mistakes again. Many films "based on true stories" can be very untrue, but not Hotel Rwanda. Personally for me, this movie is about the real side of our society, of our world. Where discrimination is tolerated, a million people died in this genocide, in contrast to the six million Jews who died during World War II.

A movie like this reminds us that we must not be after smart. The movie is great and raises your consciousness. It is a cruelly touching and shattering film. Once again it reminded us about terrible racial ideologies which existed around the world. It is sick how it managed to turn an entire people to think so disparaging about those who do not look the same as themselves.

It is actually difficult to describe feelings after you have seen this film, it is a film that makes you starts to think, ponder and maybe cry too. How an ethnic cleansing could carried out, when the world knew what happened, but nobody did anything? Not even the UN. Why are some countries worthy of help, while others do not mean a thing? Why is the world so terrible? But although the movie is really one of the best films I have seen ever which could affect so much on the kind of short time. Perhaps it might be that it made me think about how the Kurds were down gassed in the city Halabja where nobody did anything or not it actually was because it brought so many fee...
