Melbourne is in the south of Australia and the capital of the state Victoria, but between 1901 and 1927 Melbourne was the capital of the whole island. Melbourne is set around the shores of Port Phillip Bay. It lives many Italians in Melbourne and there for does Melbourne counts as the largest Italian city outside Italy. Melbourne got its name from the British Prime Minister William Lamb Melbourne. If you shall travel around in Melbourne you can do it by train. The Yarra River is the natural icon of Melbourne; it flows 245 kilometres from its sources near Mt Baw Baw to its mouth near Melbourne''''s west gate bridge.
The first group to settle down in Melbourne was led by John Batman and John Pascoe Fawkner. That was in 1835 and 1851 the gold rush made thousands of people settle down in Melbourne. Around 20 000 of the state’s 80 000 people lived in Melbourne then. Today it lives almost 4 millions in the city and Melbourne is Australia’s second largest city.
The Olympic summer games took place in Melbourne 1956, but football is the most popular sport in the state. Ten of the sixteen teams in the Australian football league have their homes in Melbourne. Although football is the most popular sport, Melbourne has hosted the Australian open tennis tournament, the Melbourne cup, which is the most prestigious handicap horse race in the world, and Australian Grand Prix Formula One Championship.
Four famous persons from Melbourne are Kylie Minogue, Cate Blanchett, Peter "Flea" Balzary and Eric Bana. Kylie Minogue is a singer and an actress, Cate Blanchett is also an actress, Flea is a member in the band Red Hot Chili Peppers and Eric Bana is an actor.
