Melbourne is the capital of Australia and it’s located around Port Phillip Bay in the south-west of the country. A person from Melbourne is officially called a Melbournian and not a Australian.
Melbourne is a big and known city for its big centre of different things, like commerce, industry and culture. Many people like to call Melbourne the “sport and cultural capital”.
It’s also very known by having the Olympic summer games in 1956 and the Commonwealth games in 2006.

In the year 1835 a group of free settlers from Great Britain founded Melbourne.
It was around the area of the Yara River and Port Phillip Bay.
But the settlers had already found other land, so they came from Tasmania (Then known as Van Diemen’s Land) to seek for more land, and then they founded Melbourne.
The British people had toke over Tasmania from the Kulin people that lived there before they came.
After founding the area that’s Melbourne today, the settlement named it Melbourne.
But still it wasn’t a city until 1847, when Queen Victoria declared a city.

The capital of Melbourne is Victoria; it was established in 1851, but then as a separate colony.
The discovery of a goldmine in the 50´s made many people interested and the Victorian gold rush began, and the state started to grow more and more.
And then they decided to call it the capital of Melbourne. The British people were very happy, because Melbourne was one of the most successful cities in the Empire of Great Britain.

Now, with money and proud they started to build coffee places, grand boulevards, big high-rise Victorian buildings. After some work, when every thing was done, a journalist called George Augustus Henry Sala visit Melbourne with his mouth open, he was very impressed and the coined the starting phrase with; “Marvelous Melbourne”.
And from that day Melbourne wasn’t only one of the biggest empire of Great Britain, it was the biggest and most important city in Australia, but in the 20thcentury Sydney toke that place.
In the early 20th century, Melbourne economic started to grow slowly and things started to get much better.

Melbourne is located and build on the quaternary lava in the south-eastern part of Australia’s mainland. Along Melbourne in that same location lie Port Phillip, and the Yarra River flows 245 kilometers from its source, Mountain Baw Baw.

Melbourne has a very oceanic climate. Melbourne is known by its changeable weather conditions. Port Phillip and the Dandenong Ranges make a combination, and with that perfect combination it creates a great weather system. One journalist went to Melbourne and he felt that weather system, and wrote an article about it, and the start phrase was: “Four seasons in one day”
Many visitors observe and admire that, and it’s a very popular thing.

The winter in Melbourne is very cold compare to the other cities winter in Australia.
The lowest temperature ever is 4.4 degrees Celsius, and it was on 14 July of 1901.
But still snowfalls are very strange in Melbourne.
One of the first snowfalls happened in Dendenong Ranges.

The summers are really and not so nice. The climates on the summers are always hot and very dry, and it’s always above 40 degrees Celsius. The hottest temperature on the summer was on 13 January of 1939 when it was 46.5 degrees Celsius, and it happened during a four day nation wide heat wave.

As I know, most of the people on this earth know Melbourne as a sporting and cultural Capital, and it’s the home of spiritual rules of football.
Every year the people from Melbourne celebrate a big variety of annual cultural events, different performing and architecture. And not only that, Melbourne is also a live music capital of Australia, Many celebrities are from Melbourne.
Like are Kylie Minogue, Cate Blanchett, Peter "Flea" Balzary and Eric Bana.
All do different stuff. Both Kylie and Cate are actresses, but Kylie sings to. So do peter, or he is in a band, and the last man standing of these four is Eric, and he is an actor.

Today Melbourne is not only inhabited with British people, it’s a multicultural city. Can you imagine this for example? “Almost a quarter of Victoria’s population is born overseas”. The city has residents from over 233 countries, more than we have here in Sweden, and they have over 180 spoken languages, with different dialects, and about 116 different religious faiths. As I wrote before, the Victorian gold rush changed everything. Just because they found some gold Melbourne increased there population with nearly three-quarter – from 25 000 to 40 000 inhabitants, this happened in 1952, about two years after the gold found.
The area that is Melbourne now had the earliest inhabitants of whole Australia, and the population then were all Indigenous Australians.Tthe most important then was Bunurong, Wurundjeri and Wathaurong people that was Aboriginal people.
But Melbourne is still a big centre of Aboriginal life. If you count them in the whole Melbourne’s population, they are 20,000 persons. (That’s only 0.6 percent of the population, that’s nothing)
From the beginning the settlers were from Ireland and Great Britain.
But know Melbourne have inhabitants from all over the world, they have a large population of Chinese, Germans, Americans or United State citizens.

Every year since 2003 Melbourne’s population increases with 50,000 people, and that is much and no other ...
