Mario Puzo was born in New York. The Godfather is his most famous book even though he has written many. In 1972, it became a movie with Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone and Al Pacino as Michael. Marlon Brando won an Oscar for his performance as the Godfather. Coppola (the producer) and Puzo won an Oscar for the best screenplay.
The Godfather was a big success. In 1974 they filmed Godfather 2 but the story didn’t end there. In 1990 The Godfather 3 was shown all over the world.
Mario Puzo hasn’t just written books but even films. Two well-known films by Mario Puzo is Superman (1978). Two years later, in 1980, the story about Superman continued with Superman 2.

This book is about the Coeleones. The family is one of the richest in New York. Don Vito Corleone is a very important gangster and his business is fear and murder.
One of Don Corleones sons, Michael, doesn’t want anything to do with his fathers choice of life. He’s a college boy who wants a quiet, peaceful and honest life with Kay, his girlfriend. He’s very different from the other members of the family. That’s what he wants. But it isn’t as easy as he thinks to be left outside the family business. His brother gets murdered and someone of the other families tries to kill his father. Slowly Michael changes and he has to take charge of his family’s business when his father is recovering. He realizes that, at heart, he’s a real Corleone too.
Michael’s father, dies a natural death playing with his grandson in the garden on a Sunday morning. All his life people had tried to kill him. They had all failed.
Now the young Michael becomes the boss, the Godfather of the Corleones and if he has to, he can be as dangerous as the rest...

Michael – a young man who wanted a different life than his father and brother but in the end he had to take his responsibility for the family and he realized that he was a true Corleone.
In the beginning he is very honest to Kay. But he doesn’t want to drag her in or even tell her anything about his job. He didn’t want to scare her. He doesn’t tell her much when they get married either. He’s crushed but he has to “save” the family.
I liked Michael in the beginning because he stood for his opinion but then my approve started to fail. I would have been friend with him. I don’t think that I would beg him for a job or anything like that but he really stands up for people that he cares about. That’s nice even though there are other ways to stand up for someone that you care about...
Don Corleone – a kind man who had learned a lot from his time as a real famous gangster. He didn’t want the all the mafia families to fight... instead he wanted them to make peace and work together. He didn’t try to take revenge on murder with murder. He tried to talk with people and maybe come up with a compromise. He really wished for peace. Michael crushes all his fathers beliefs in the beginning of his time as the big leader, the Godfather.
A real human-knower. He could tell who of his workers betrayed him. A good role model.
The first sentence of the book is:
“ On the last Saturday in August, 1945, Miss Constanzia Corleone, daughter of Don Vito Corleone, married Carlo Rizzo.” It says that the story starts in August 1945. That’s after the world war 2 but Mario didn’t mention anything about it. New York is a big city with taxis, high buildings and machine guns.
The language was easy. An Intermediate (1700 words) in British English. I thought it was very easy to understand and I like to read books in English, but I think that the book should have been written in American English. That would have been more fun. Like as if I would really be there for real.
I think that the book wants to tell the readers that they shouldn’t say anything about any situation before they’ve experienced it. Because then everything can be different from the way they thought it would be.
Michael knew the way his family worked, how they acted in different situations. When he was in those situations that he maybe had seen his family and other bosses in... he knew exactly what to do. If you are very influenced by someone else you’ll maybe slowly change your habits and then end up like them all.
There were many characters in this story. Not more than necessary but it was difficult anyway... I couldn’t keep track! I mixed the persons who for example worked for the Corleones and the other families.
No one killed Michael. They didn’t try hard enough because nobody thought that he could do anything but he proved them all wrong.
