London has become the place where historic past and vibrant present come together. A blend of history and ground breaking architechture has created a constantly evolving city. London is one of the most remarkable and exciting cities in the world. It is also a very accesible city, with five international airports, the extensive Underground system, and train and bus network. It is a city of history and culture. Even though London has a population of over 7 million, 30% of it is made up of parks and green space, which makes London a great place for walks, relaxation on sporting activities. London is also a great place for shopping. From major department stores to designer boutiques and street markets, there’s something for every taste. When it comes to nightlife, it is hard to compete with London. There are a huge number of restaurants, pubs, cinemas, theatres and nightclubs, and also offers live music and comedy venues.


Sightseeing in London

London offers a great variety of major attractions, and places to visit. And it doesn’t have to cost a lot! With 238 attractions that are free to enter, this is the place for sightseeing.

British Museum

The British Museum is one of the great museums of the world. It was founded in 1738 by Act of Parliament, and shows the works of man from prehistoric to modern times with collections from all over the world. Famous objects include the Rosetta Stone, sculptures from the Parthenon, the Sutton Hoo and Mildenhall treasures and the Portland Vase.

Imperial War Museum

Dedicated to the 20th century, this national museum is one of great diversity. Exhibitions range from tanks and aircraft to personal letters and ration books. It also includes film and sound recording, as well as some of the century’s best known paintings. It exists to show what happened during the two world wars, as well as many other conflicts fought since, what led up to them and what happened afterwards.

Westminster Abbey

One of Britain’s finest Gothic buildings, and scene of the coronation, marrige and burial of British monarchs. Visitors can see the Grave of the Unknown Warrior, Royal Tombs and Shrine of St Edward the Confessor, the Coronation Chair, Lady Chapel and Poets’ cornet, Pyx Chamber, Nave and cloisters, the Royal Chapels and the Undercroft Museum. The ‘Service of Light’ on New Millenium Eve saw the induction of the Abbey’s new spectaculary lighting system.

But, if you don’t feel like going to a museum to examine dusty old paintings, or visiting a place of worship, there’s always British Airways London Eye – an extraordinary symbol for an extraordinary city. As the world’s largest ferris wheel, it allows you to take in 55 of London’s most famous landmarks in just 30 minutes!

You can also visit Madame Tussaud’s and the London Planetarium At Madame Tussaud’s, you can discover what it’s like to be famous at ‘Blush’, Tussauds interactive party. Have paparazzi snap you when you arrive, get interviewed about your latest film, and then be told what not to wear by out fashion expert, miss Blush. Then feel the fear as you escape serial killers in Chamber Live. The Chamber´s 200-year gruesome history gets a nasty update where figures come alive and you will become part of the action!

Of course, you can’t visit London, without visiting Buckingham Palace. The 19 State Rooms, The Throne Room, Picture Gallery are all open to vistors. As is the Ballroom, the largest room in Buckingham Palace, used for State banquets. The extended visitors route include a 450 metre walk through the south side of the Palace Garden.


Famous People

Daniel Defoe

Born in the summer of 1660, to parents Alice and James Foe, Daniel Defoe was an English novelist and journalist. He is the author of Robinson Crusoe (1719), a story of a man who is shipwrecked alone on an island. His real surname was Foe, but he altered it in 1703. Along with Samuel Richardson, Defoe is considered the founder of the English novel. Before, stories were usually written as long poems or dramas. He died on April 24 in 1731. “All men would me tyrants if they could.”

Ian Fleming

Ian Fleming was born in 1908, as the son of Major Valentine Fleming, and Evelyn St. Croix Fleming. He created the character James Bond, and not only was he a writer, but also a journalist and a secret service agent. Though Fleming spent some time with British Intelligence, his stories of James Bond are far from reality. They offer colourful locations, beautiful women and exciting adventures. Although Bond’s attitude towards women is considered dated, the books have not lost their popularity.

Charles Chaplin

Charles Spencer Chaplin was born in London, England on 15 April, 1889, to parents Sir Charles Chaplin and Hannah Hill, who separated shortly after Charles’ birth, leaving Hannah to provide for her children. In 1896, when Hannah was no longer able to care for her children, Charles and his brother Sydney was admitted to Lambeth Workhouse, and later Hanwell School for Orphans and Destitute Children. On December 25, 1977, Charles Chaplin passed away in his home, at the age of 87.
