London is the capital city of England and the United Kingdom. It was the Romans that started London from the beginning and they first named the city Londinium. Greater London as it’s also called covers an area of 609 square miles (1579 km²), making it one of the largest city by area in the world. The city’s population is 7.6 million people. There are people from all over the world, different religions and 300 different languages. It’s a big city with influence on fashion, politic, education and so on it also has a famous and tidal river called the Thames.



Some big tourist attractions are Tower Bridge, Big Ben, the London Eye, Buckingham Palace and several others. West end is London’s main entertainment shopping district. Some famous places in west end are Oxfoord Street, Leicester Square, Covent Garden and Piccadilly Circus. London is often called “the Green City”. There is many parks and open spaces. Well-known parks are Hyde Park and St. James Park. The parks are often used for sports and open-air concerts. One of the famous tourist attractions is Tower Bridge. It’s a bridge over the Thames that is 244 metres long and 16 metres wide and weighs 11,000 tons. It was finished in June 1894. You can walk on a footpath over the bridge or look at exhibitions or museum inside the towers.

The climate in London is mild both summer and winter. The warmest month is July and the coolest January and the driest month is February. The highest temperature reached in London is 38.1 degrees Celsius on 10 of August 2003. About the sports. The most popular sports in London are football, rugby and cricket. For example just the city London has 12 football clubs. London hosted the Summer Olympics in 1908 and 1948 and in July 2005 London was chosen to host the Games in 2012. That makes London the first city to have the Summer Olympics three times. Another well-known competition in London is the annual Wimbledon Tennis Championships.


The most known travelling way in London is the London Underground, also called the Tube. The Underground is the oldest, largest and most expensive metro system in the world. It started in 1863 and now has sixteen lines. The Tube makes three million journeys a day and one billion a year. Even if the Tube is big, the bus service is bigger. It’s a twenty four hour service with six million journeys on 700 different routes every weekday. London also has several airports; actually there are eight of them just in London. Some of them are London Heathrow Airport, London Gatwick Airport and London City Airport.
