Ireland

The Irish people have since time immemorial been an opressed people. Since they were turned catholics by the British missionary S:t Patrick until today they have had to fight for their freedom against people like the Norwegian vikings to the armies of the British opressors.
The battle against the british can be dated all the way back to the 12th century when Henry the 3:rd invaded Ireland, something that at first was welcomed by the Irish because they were promised protection and it was a fact that England had a way more sofisticated culture. It all turned out to be just empty promises, the Irish people could for example not even choose their own bishops.
Later on there came laws that forbid the Irish to speak gaelish, their own language, they were also not allowed to marry the British colonists. These prohibitions caused oppositions and sporadic rebellions which were brutally fought back by the ruling British occupying power. The parlament of Dublin couldn’t either make any decitions without getting an approval by the English monarky.
During the 16th century king Henry the 8th desided that British and Irish colonials should not be held segregated, he would rule them all! He declared himself ruler of entire Ireland in 1541. The Irish who held an opposition against British rulership made a pact with Spain. Spanish troops disembarked in Ireland but this pact was defeated and slaughtered by the ruling British.
Thousands of Irish were killed and cattle and land was destroyed.
During the 17th century the British tyranny changed shape, the disruption which had been cultural now turned religious. Their ground and status was systematically taken away from the catholics. This created anger and hate. This peaked in 1641, when catholics killed about 2000 protestants. Out for revenge the British started a three step program in 1649. The plan was to eliminate all catholic power on Ireland and turn it protestantic.
The catholic people saw some light when James the 2nd , a catholic, approached the throne.
Instead William of Orange took the throne into possession and a fight of power( here the Irish supported King James in the fight against King William’s ruling) with many battles as a consequence. King William came out as the victorer and stengthened his power on Ireland.
During the 18th century the Irish parlament, mainly protestants, continued their persecution of catholics.
Affected by the French revolution and the formation of The United States of America the Irish again made a rebellion during the1790s against the rulers. France that was in war with England since 1793 offfered their assistance and in the belief of that a french invasion of England was near, the Irish rebelled, but a storm had prevented the French fleet to come and participate. In 1798 the rebellion was struck down and the leaders were executed.
In 1801 a union was forged between Ireland and Great Britain, the prime minister of England and the British parlament promised the catholics freedom of religion, a promise that in Westminister encountered protests and that never was incorporated.
The persecution of the Irish went on and catholics got no political rights and the Parlament of Dublin was abolished .
